I recently visited Rose Hall Montego Bay whilst on holiday with my wife, July 18. I always wanted to visit the place after driving past it several times whilst on holiday in Negril. This time we stayed in Riu Reggae in Montego Bay which was only a 15-minute taxi ride away.
I had always been curious to hear more about the place and thought it was something different to try in Jamaica.
Story of Rose Hall
Who doesn’t like a good ghost story?
The legend of the white witch of Rose Hall is an interesting story.
The story involves Annee Palmer. From the sound of it, she was a right sort.
The story says that she was born in Haiti to an English mother and Irish father and spent most of her life in Haiti. When her parents died of yellow fever, she was adopted by a nanny who taught her witchcraft and voodoo.
She moved to Jamaica and married John Palmer, owner of Rose Hall Plantation. Annee murdered Palmer along with two subsequent husbands and numerous male plantation slaves. Annee was murdered herself by a slave.
Origins of the story?
There has been some debate about the truth around the story with some people saying it was based on an old famous Jamaican novel called The White Witch of Rosehall by Herbert G. de Lisser, published in 1929.
Like all these types of stories, they are open to interpretation.
If you want to learn more about the story I would recommend the daytime tour. The night time tour is more for fun and scares.
We had to wait for darkness before we started which given the surroundings was rather creepy, at one point as our excellent tour guide was introducing the story somebody appeared in the upstairs window which made all of us jump.
It would have been nice to go in a smaller group because some of the rooms where small and can be hard to fit everyone in.
Our guide told the story and each room had its own story. People jumped out of wardrobes. Chairs moved across the floor. I won’t give too much away. My wife screamed a lot. It’s a blast. There was some small children who got upset with the screaming so maybe not a good place to take little kids.
I would definitely recommend Rose Hall Montego Bay for a visit. It’s both fun and interesting.
